I am eighteen
years old on a friday
night
in new york city
reading bukowski. I cried
a little, earlier,
trying to jump on
the words who
wanted to be left
alone, like
a girl
on friday night.

so I lay down
on my bed
with the old
man's new
book
and now I'm all
weepy again
because he writes
about good people
with cat's souls.

I know
exactly what
he's talking
about, and
my cat's all
the way back in
virginia.
..not the way most kids my age are getting wasted right now, that's for sure.

got bukowski and cats on the brain, obviously.

I feel very old.

as someone who got wasted the normal way on their 18th - your way is a lot better. I know how you feel when you say you feel old. Life's precious and almost twenty years of mine is gone. it's a sad feeling.

the whole of the first stanza is 5 star.

you're very welcome, and thank you. your signature is too true, by the way, and details a nearly impossible task.

I met a couple of 18 year olds who were going out to get wasted the old fashioned way. I prefer the book way myself too.

every new year is like a miracle to me, as if I can hardly believe I am continuing to get older. I think it's because the definition of years scarcely seem to matter: some people live for years within a single day, others, the opposite.

that said, perhaps feeling old when young is a good thing; it merely means that we have been living consciously.

well, i know you have an old soul
which i am sure you've heard
but I don't want you to fall into the habit of concentrating on age
as ages pass you by
in a sort of wasting time while time wastes sorta thing
i just spent 5 years FIVE YEARS doing just that.
we are now
this is it
experience
the fountainhead
of this moment
all right here
strip it down
flesh side up
slow...
let the boatman wait!

I don't feel old, actually;
I'm hoping that the opportunities I wished for
still have a chance to appear.

If that makes sense.
